Set in post World War 1 America, the story is told through the eyes of Gatsby's neighbour Nick, who watches as Jay Gatsby pursues the hand of his married cousin Daisy Buchanan.

After they are reintroduced an affair begins and a series of tragic events unfolds due to the complex series of extramarital affairs in progress and competing love interests.

The moral of the story, and Fitzgeralds assertions, is that the ellusive american dream is actually unattainable, as even a wealthy man like Gatsby cannot possess that which he truly loves.
