Set in Paris during medieval times in and around the cathedral of Notre-Dame, this gothic drama tells the tale of Esmeralda the gypsy dancer who is rescued from the gallows by Quasimodo the hunchback after a false accusation of murder by Captain Phoebus who attempted to rape her.
The setting in Paris, mainly under the twin towers of the cathedral of Notre-Dame, includes a caste as wide ranging as the French King all the way down to beggars who live beneath the streets of Paris in its sewers.
Written to highlight the cathedral and portray it as a symbolic guardian of the city, Quasimodo personifies it with a sense of bravery despite it's apparent deformity, in the face of injustice and corruption.
