As travellers through an unknown continent, accompanied by an alien race or races, they were naturally not in touch with the people through whose countries they passed, who, when not actually hostile, remained in a state of armed neutrality. So far as I have been able to discover, nearly all the tribes in the Congo Basin either are, or have been, cannibals; and among some of them the practice is on the increase. Races who until lately do not seem to have been cannibals, though situated in a country surrounded by cannibal races, have, from increased intercourse with their neighbours, learned to eat human flesh; for since the entry of Europeans into the country greater facilities for travelling and greater safety for travellers have come about.
